- Sunshine Party The Innocent Bystanders 4:55
Lyrics
Sunshine Party
Partisan and Kompromat
All the things that I do lack
Cling to your network, straight and strong
Belies the lies that done some wrong
But you’re the sunshine party over principle (that roams thread bare)
Yes, you’re the sunshine party over principle
As you slouch towards the sea lake
While you lick your sweet swampy plaything towards Bethlehem
Talking Heads fall truly flat
Travesty while courts are packed
Can’t wake from this full nightmare
Vacuous, Vicious tweets can’t bare
But you’re the sunshine party over principle as you draw red lines
Yes, you’re the sunshine party over principle
As you slouch towards the sea lake
While you lick your sweet swampy plaything towards Bethlehem
It’s the fear that stays near that
Dictates why you appear so
Crippled in such deeds you play
Don’t fiddle while I burn away today
Just peddle wares where life is bleak
Four walls are scrolled to be the peak
Partisan and Kompromat
Windfall spree with public money flat
Dismantle all the goodness done
Pressing lies one by one
Cause you’re the sunshine party over principle, there’s no limit how low you’ll go
Yes, you’re the sunshine party over principle
As you slouch towards the sea lake
While you lick your sweet swampy plaything to Bethlehem
Story
Sunshine Party
Ben wrote this song in a fit of anger directed at the contemporary political situation in the U.S. He was inspired by W.B. Yates poem “The Second Coming” (with a nod to Joan Didion) to lament the rise of a beastly anti-christ supported and encouraged by a feckless political party that makes the pilgrimage to a swampy Mar a Lago as an alternative (or precursor?) to slouching towards Bethlehem. Although this was written in 2018, it was still relevant in 2021 with the seeming passing of the guard.
